2024
Well yet another wet start to this years growing season, but we did what we could - And just drunk more T&C when the rain fell.
We also needed to replace our fence this year, and as you can see, it was a BIG job. But we are really pleased with the outcome, and now shows off our site well.
The lack of butterflies and bees was extremely worrying, as our Cardoon is usually alive with fluttering wings and buzzing bees. It wasn’t until early September when we did see a few of our essential friends. But we’ll keep providing as much colour and tasty produce for them next year, in the hope things improve.
We did have a bumper crop of strawberries, that just melted in your mouth. There really is nothing better than tasting the fruits of your labour.
2023
From one extreme to another this year. We went from lovely sunny days to lots of rain. But yet again the produce delivered its bounty, with the rainbow chard doing exceptionally well in the no dig bed, an more runner beans than we could manage. Peppers - tomatoes - cucumbers and even an aubergine from the ploy tunnel, it certainly gave us a rainbow plate full. Not so good with the potatoes or carrots, but hey! we can’t grumble really.
It was also really good to see more women feeling able to join our sessions, with some self referring to others being recommended to give us a look. It’s been a great season so far, and with the colder weather drawing in, we’ll be busy with a variety of maintenance jobs around the plot. Because anyone with an allotment will tell you, there’s always work to be done.
2022
Despite the extreme heatwave we all endured this summer, we were pleased to have some lovely crops. We experimented with the ‘no dig’ method, and WOW the Spaghetti squash loved it, so obviously a great plant to grow when there’s very little rain, but loads of sun. As with the tomatoes and peppers in the poly tunnel. Our beast bush (aka the Cardoon) thrived again this year, which gave hundreds of bees a feast. And of course the foxgloves - all self seeded thanks to the birds, was a wonderful sight for us.
We also welcomed some Ukrainian quests to the allotment. Lovely ladies and worked really hard, they all said how much they enjoyed being outside and doing something productive - Дякую за підтримку
2021
We are delighted to announce we are one of the local charities to receive a Suffolk Award in Recognition of Outstanding Service to the Community in Suffolk during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The award was presented to us by The High Sheriff of Suffolk Edward and Penny, when they visited our Lowestoft allotment recently. It was great to be able to show off our site and introduce them to our She Shed.
2020
Unfortunately there’s not been the usual buzz on the allotment this year, but there’s been plenty of tea and coffee drunk - a fair few tears - and lots of C-19 talk.
This has been possible, as we started running 1-2-1 ‘Well-Being Workouts’ for women needing to have some time away from the family or just to do something other than looking at 4 walls.
We’re so pleased we could adapt our services, to help and support any woman in need.
2017
We took on the Lowestoft allotment in the early part of 2017, it was in a terrible condition and to say there were a few blackberry bushes would be an understatement. With guts and determination (as well as a huge amount of effort from our amazing husbands) we worked tirelessly to turn this ugly duckling into one of our most favourite places to be. We even planted our fist crops in October, onions - garlic and shallots, all ready for next years soup :-)
